Exploring the crossroads of Europe & Asia by sea: Gulets for charter in Turkey

Turkey, a country known for its fascinating culture and rich history, is also renowned for its maritime heritage. Its strategic position on the Bosporus Strait, a crucial nautical link between Europe and Asia, enabled it to dominate the seas from the Byzantine through to the Ottoman Empire and beyond. One of the most iconic vessels to stem from Turkey remains the gulet. Traditional wooden yachts, originating from the southwestern coast of Turkey, gulets have been used over the centuries for everything from transportation to fishing, trading, and diving.

The term ‘gulet’ comes from the French word for schooner, “gouélette,” which came to Turkey through Venice. Gulets are often built from mahogany, pine, or teak, offering a distinctive blend of luxury and historical charm that sets them apart from more conventional yachts. Following a tourism boom in Turkey in the mid-1980s, these traditional boats were reimagined as leisure boats. Unlike other yachts, gulets boast broad, flat decks and spacious interiors, which make them ideal for group trips and family vacations. Their large sails and robust engines provide a stable foundation, perfect for cruising the tranquil waters of the Turkish coastline, making them a popular choice for a charter.

One of Turkey’s top gulet cruising destinations is the Turquoise Coast, stretching from Antalya to Fethiye. Famous for its clear blue waters, secluded bays, and historical importance, visitors can explore ancient Lycian ruins, sunbathe on pristine beaches, and enjoy snorkelling in crystal-clear coves. The slow pace of a gulet allows guests to completely immerse themselves in the area’s scenic beauty and historical sites, offering a unique perspective that cannot be experienced by land.

The Bodrum Peninsula is another stunning destination in Turkey to discover via gulet charter. Known for its vibrant nightlife and elegant dining scene, Bodrum also features a variety of cultural and historical sites, including the ancient Bodrum Castle and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A gulet charter provides a peaceful retreat from the lively town centres, where one can enjoy traditional Turkish culture and modern luxury at their own pace.

Not to be left out, the Gulf of Göcek is another remarkable destination for a gulet charter in Turkey. Best known for its sheltered bays and its proximity to several maritime national parks, Göcek offers a quieter, more secluded cruising experience onboard a gulet. It is an excellent spot for those looking to escape the more crowded tourist areas and relax in nature. With its lush forests and tranquil waters, the Gulf of Göcek is perfect for swimming, diving, and hiking. Chartering a gulet here allows for easy access to the area’s hidden coves and unspoiled natural beauty, providing a serene and picturesque cruising experience.

Unlike any other form of yacht charter, gulets offer a distinctive exploration of Turkey’s scenic coastlines and historic sites. Providing a specular backdrop for relaxation and insight, a gulet charter in Turkey provides an engaging way to experience Turkey’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, from the secluded bays of Göcek to the bustling shores of Bodrum.
